BELIEF'S UNTITLED:002-INFINITY

Belief EXP, the experimental division of Santa Monica-based design and production company Belief, recently announced the list of artists who will be contributing to "Untitled:002-Infinity." The second in an ongoing series of digital projects (last year's "Untitled:001-Darkness" screened at RESFEST), the newest installment includes video shorts and interstitials based on the theme of infinity. The projects use a combination of original video footage, composite art, computer generated design elements, typography and music and sound design. Among the 30 artists and companies involved are longtime RESFEST contributors MK 12; Siraj Jhaveri, whose music video for Laurent Garnier's "The Man With the Red Face" was a RESFEST favorite last year; and Amoeba, a design studio based in Oslo, Norway. The new collaborative project will debut at the Promax & BDA conference in Miami, June 20-23, 2001. DV SUMMER SCHOOLS

There are more and more summer filmmaking programs and classes than ever before. Below, RES lists several to choose from:

MAINE PHOTOGRAPHIC WORKSHOPS

 
Located in beautiful Rockport, Maine, the Workshops has long been a haven for Hollywood types looking for a way to spend a few weeks lounging on the coast of Maine. You'll find many notable producers and directors teaching classes, as well as pros like RES contributor David Leitner. The Workshops recently upgraded its digital facilities, and now has several Avid Xpress DV stations, as well as six Final Cut Pro workstations. Plus there are now several 3-day weekend workshops to get you started. Check the Web site for a full listing of weeklong seminars throughout the summer.

EX'PRESSION DIGITAL FILMMAKING SUMMER SESSION

 
Ex'pression Center for New Media returns this year with its four-week "total immersion" summer session in Digital Filmmaking from July 9 through August 4. Students learn the entire process of film production by writing, shooting, mixing, directing, editing and designing sound for a short film. Working in three-person production teams, students rotate among the positions of director, cinematographer and sound mixer. Every student writes his or her own script, shoots in DVCAM using Sony cameras and edits picture on Final Cut Pro. Info: 877-833-8800.

FILM ARTS FOUNDATION

The San Francisco-based FAF offers many filmmaking courses throughout the year. In June, the focus is on sound. In "Layers of Sound," for example students learn about computer-based sound editing in a workshop covering all technical aspects of sound design with plenty of hands-on instruction in the Pro Tools studio. BAVC WORKSHOPS

The Bay Area Video Coalition offers a long list of classes and workshops. The After Effects Bootcamp (September 17-21), for example, starts with basic keyframing techniques, and then moves quickly on to offer a comprehensive understanding of the most complex aspects of animation, compositing and special effects. The classes fill quickly, so sign up well in advance. "Stranger Inside"
STRANGER INSIDE

The women-in-prison genre has a long and less than stellar history, but that didn't stop filmmaker Cheryl Dunye from using it as the foundation for her second feature, "Stranger Inside." Dunye is already well known for a series of video shorts from the 1990s, many of which feature herself in amusing riffs on identity, race and sexuality. Dunye's talent has always been in making these issues accessible. In her first feature film, "The Watermelon Woman" (1996), Dunye examined at the history of Black women in film. But since this history doesn't exist, Dunye invented one, creating a hybrid form that's part fact and part fiction.

"Stranger Inside"
"Stranger Inside" similarly plays between fact and fiction in a gripping prison drama that traces 21-year-old inmate Treasure Lee (Yolanda Ross) as she tries to reconnect with her mother, Brownie (Davenia McFadden), who is in jail serving a life sentence. A co-production of Michael Stipe and Jim McKay's C-100 and HBO, the fast-paced, gripping film is a striking departure from the lurid stories and impoverished visual lexicon that so often mark the women-in-prison genre. But Dunye's story deviates, too, from the gritty, realist portraits of more serious prison films. Indeed, Dunye insisted from the start that her film was not going to be a rough, melancholy portrait, but instead a radiant exploration rich in color and texture. Dunye says that she initially imagined the project being perfect for DV, and dutifully took it to "all the usual suspects." No one would touch it until C-100 and HBO came aboard, which is especially startling given the strength of the story and Dunye's credentials. HBO wanted Dunye to shoot on 35mm, which she did, despite her earlier inclinations.

Working within the very real limitations that accompany a limited budget, a 25-day shoot and a difficult location, Dunye has succeeded in creating a film whose haunting beauty offers a stark contrast to the lives of its characters. In addition to being Dunye's strongest narrative project to date, the film also brings to light many of the unknown facts about women in prison, and offers top-notch performances and real emotion. Although the film had a special screening at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, Dunye's film will have its official premiere on HBO in June. Don't miss it.

"Inflat-o-scape"
INFLAT-O-SCAPE

Billed as "an experimental, multi-faceted view of an urban information zone," Jessica Irish's remarkable new Web project, Inflat-o-scape, explores the promises and discontents of a culture infused with technology. Inspired by the (failed) history of inflatable architecture (!), the LA-based digital artist merges all sorts of pneumatic imagery with digitally generated landscapes and structures. Irish's sophisticated Flash design incorporates randomized sequences of images, words and sounds (including a haunting musical score by Phil Curtis) to create a truly unique Web-based experience that's like floating through an urban android's subconscious as it dreams of a better way of life.

PETER J. OWENS DIGITAL MEDIA AWARD
