Monitor: The Futurists
Tomorrow's Atelier
Words: David Alm
The Eyebeam Atelier in New York has been reaching a steady crescendo since its inception in 1996. Founded by filmmaker John S. Johnson to be a seminal element of the contemporary art scene, Eyebeam continues to fulfill his vision: this non-profit for the education, production and exhibition of new media art has recently commissioned the construction of a 90,000 square-foot museum and production space in the city's artistic nexus, Chelsea. The stunningly contemporary structure by Diller + Scofidio -- chosen after a two-year competition that featured some of the world's most eminent architects -- will be finished in 2006. Until then, an old brick warehouse on the site serves as Eyebeam's interim Atelier, where the facility will host its first exhibition of works-in-progress from its artists-in-residence program (October 9 - December 1). Among the innovative works are Jem Cohen's Chain, a film about corporate homogenization, MTAA's Endnode, a networked sculpture in the form of a large tree, and Cory Arcangel's 8-bit video game hack, I Shot Andy Warhol.
