Res Screening (March 2004)
The RES Screening Series, the monthly event that puts innovative short films and music videos on the big screen and presents special guest speakers to audiences at Hollywood's Egyptian Theater, will bring the month of March to a rollicking close with a special mini-retrospective of work by the acclaimed French graphic studio H5, who will introduce their work in person.
The Paris-based collective got its start creating corporate identities, label logos, cover art and press campaigns, with clients that include Superdiscount, Etienne de Crécy, Le Tone, Alex Gopher, Dior Homme Couture by Hedi Slimane, Dior Parfum and Armani Parfum. H5 entered the world of music videos with a highly acclaimed promo for Alex Gopher's single "The Child." The innovative video takes viewers on a rollercoaster ride through the busy streets of Manhattan, rendered here as text, making the video a gorgeous and amusing instance of concrete poetry, brought to fluid motion. Following the success of this video, H5 went on to produce videos for numerous artists; the RES program will showcase many of these, including promos for Massive Attack, Playgroup, Zebda and Audio Bullys, as well as the team's award-winning video for Royksopp's "Remind Me" and the aforementioned "The Child."
To coincide with the theatrical release of Lars von Trier's film Dogville, RES will present the world premiere of Shari Roman's new short film, ADM : DOP, about von Trier's acclaimed cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle (The Celebration, 28 Days Later).
Among the numerous new short films and music videos premiering this month is the Basement Jaxx's "Plug it In" from Santa Monica-based Scandinavian directing collective Traktor. Various hijinks enliven this video featuring robotic models, bumbling security guards and NSYNC crooner JC Chasez. The directors and band previously teamed on the infamous, award-winning "Where's Your Head At?" video.
Immediately following the screening, Traktor's inimitable Ole Sanders will join H5's Ludovic Houplain, François Allaux and Hervé de Crécy to speak about their work and take questions from the audience. Traktor's Mats will DJ at the afterparty at nearby Boardner's.
