2004 Editorial Calendar

January/February (Volume 7, #1)
Random Shuffle: Storytelling in the New Millennium

Gus Van Sant, Lars Von Trier and Alejandro Iñarritu are only a handful of storytellers radically retooling the traditional narrative feature film, moving away from the straightforward, linear tales to temporally disjointed, even repetitive, storylines. This issue looks at storytelling across all media, from games to music to video art and new fiction. Articles will include a look at new voices and trends in screenwriting, with profiles of five new screenwriters to watch; the best video game stories; database narratives; flash magazines; new short fiction geniuses; and more.

March/April (Volume 7, #2)
The Young and the Restless: New Talent

Our annual RES 10 issue this year expands to include our most extensive survey ever of emerging talent across the fields of film, music video, design and graphics, with visits to the top classrooms around the world where we talk with students and instructors about trends and talent.

May/June (Volume 7, #3)
Trespassing: The Travel Issue

A certain wanderlust infects a new generation of artists, who lug laptops and cameras around the world... The travel issue.

July/August (Volume 7, #4)
All the Rage
Continuing the discussion started a year ago, we return to the topic of resistance in its myriad forms, with special attention to the divide between portraits of apocalypse and rage versus strategies of hope. Look for stories on activist film- and videomakers including Wal'id Raad and Rich Rowley, international protest graphics, tactics of cultural refraction, and more. This one's bound to be our most controversial issue!

September/October (Volume 7, #5)
RESFEST Special Collector's Issue

The eighth annual RESFEST returns with a joined magazine/program guide. Look for stories on the making of videos in the festival, profiles of the filmmakers and stories on the year's biggest trends.

November/December (Volume 7, #6)

A NOTE ON THE FUTURE OF RES

RES magazine's milestone RESFEST tenth anniversary issue will be the last issue published in 2006. We plan to launch a new hybrid RES publication in 2007, one that will transform this site into a dynamic, daily online destination, while fully integrating all of our content across the multiple platforms of print, Web, DVD and events. Please contact general@res.com with any questions, and watch this space for further updates in the new year.
